NMSU to host subsurface irrigation workshop in Albuquerque Oct. 13

ALBUQUERQUE – There is a solution to having a green grass yard and still being water-efficient – subsurface drip irrigation.

New Mexico State University’s Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service will present a free hands-on demonstration and installation workshop from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 13, for people to learn how to install a subsurface irrigation system and the benefits it can provide.

“Subsurface drip irritation can reduce water used for irrigation by 20 to 30 percent,” said Bernd Leinauer, NMSU Extension turfgrass specialist, who will be leading the workshop. “This type of system waters right at the roots, which minimizes water loss to overhead evaporation, wind and overspray.”

This type of system has been installed in an Albuquerque city park and a golf course in Santa Fe.

Location of the event will be given to those who register. Registration is limited to 30 participants. Attendees should dress for outdoor work.
