NMSU symposium in Union County will focus on cattle reproduction
NMSU Press Release
By Darrell J. Pehr
Healthy and reliable reproduction in beef cattle can make a big difference in whether a cattle operation is successful. With cattle and calf production generating more than $1.5 billion in revenue across New Mexico during 2014, success in the industry has a large impact on the state’s economy. Livestock reproduction will be the topic of a symposium Nov. 17 at the Civic Center in Clayton. The event will be sponsored by New Mexico State University’s Union County Cooperative Extension Service. “NMSU experts will provide the latest information of importance to ranchers,” said Whitney Brock, Union County agriculture agent and program manager. “We will cover a wide range of topics, from nutrition to diseases, that can be very valuable for cattle producers.”
Registration at the symposium starts at 9:30 a.m. A welcome and introductions start at 9:50 a.m. At 10 a.m., NMSU Extension Beef Specialist Marcy Ward will speak on “Anatomy of the Bovine Reproductive Tract.” At 10:30 a.m., Adam Summer, NMSU assistant professor of animal science, will present “Estrous Cycle of a Cow.” Summer will continue at 11 a.m. with “Estrus Synchronization.” Questions will be taken from 11:30-11:45 a.m., followed by lunch, catered by Mary’s Backdoor Porch. At 1 p.m., NMSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. John Wenzel will speak on “Reproductive Diseases.” Ward will speak at 1:30 p.m. on “Beef Cow Nutrition,” followed at 2 p.m. with a presentation on “Body Conditioning Scoring.” At 2:30 p.m., Paul Gutierrez, NMSU Extension specialist, will present “How Reproductive Management Pays,” followed by additional questions and a survey at 3 p.m.
Registration cost is $25 at the door, but participants are asked to RSVP by Nov. 5 so organizers can get a head count. Please RSVP to Brock at 575-374-9361 or 505-306-4966.
